Children's Health at Bopple Surgery
Newborn and Early Childhood Health Checks
The early weeks and months of a child's life are a critical period for health monitoring. Our GPs conduct thorough newborn and early childhood health checks, including:
- Physical examination from head to toe, including weight, length and head circumference
- Assessment of feeding, sleep patterns and general wellbeing
- Monitoring of developmental milestones appropriate to the child's age
- Hip and heart screening in newborns
- Guidance for parents on nutrition, safe sleeping, and infant care
Regular check-ups in early childhood help ensure that growth and development are progressing as expected, and provide an opportunity for parents to raise any concerns they have noticed at home.
Childhood Immunisations
Immunisation is one of the most effective tools available to protect children from serious infectious diseases. Bopple Surgery follows the National Immunisation Program (NIP) schedule, ensuring your child receives the right vaccinations at the right time.
Our GPs and practice team:
- Administer all vaccines included on the National Immunisation Program schedule
- Provide clear information to parents about each vaccine, what to expect and how to manage common reactions
- Maintain accurate immunisation records aligned with the Australian Immunisation Register (AIR)
- Offer catch-up vaccination planning for children who have missed scheduled doses
Developmental and Behavioural Assessments
Early identification of developmental or behavioural concerns gives children the best opportunity to access appropriate support when it is most effective. Our GPs are experienced in assessing a range of developmental and behavioural presentations in children, including:
- Language and speech delays
- Gross and fine motor development concerns
- Social and emotional development
- Behavioural concerns including attention, activity level and impulsivity
- Learning difficulties and school-readiness concerns
- Autism spectrum concerns, initial assessment and referral pathways
Where a concern is identified, your GP will discuss findings with you, provide an initial management plan and arrange referral to appropriate specialist or allied health services, such as a paediatrician, speech pathologist, occupational therapist or psychologist, as clinically indicated.
Management of Common Childhood Illnesses
Children experience a range of illnesses, particularly in the early years of life as their immune systems develop. Bopple Surgery GPs provide assessment and management of a wide range of common childhood conditions, including:
- Fever assessment and management
- Ear infections (otitis media) and throat infections
- Respiratory illnesses including croup, bronchiolitis and childhood asthma
- Skin conditions including eczema, impetigo and rashes
- Gastroenteritis and digestive complaints
- Urinary tract infections
- Conjunctivitis and minor eye complaints
- Allergic reactions and allergy assessment
Our GPs take a careful, age-appropriate approach to assessment and will always explain their findings and treatment recommendations in plain language so parents feel confident in the plan.
Minor Injury Care for Children
Children are active, curious and prone to the occasional knock, cut or sprain. Our GPs are experienced in assessing and treating minor injuries in children of all ages, including:
- Wound assessment, cleaning and closure
- Management of minor burns and abrasions
- Sprain and minor joint injury assessment
- Head injury assessment
- Foreign body removal where safe and appropriate
Adolescent Health
The teenage years bring a distinct set of health needs and challenges. Our GPs provide a confidential, respectful space for adolescents to discuss their health, whether that involves physical concerns, mental health, relationships, sexual health or lifestyle factors.
We understand that adolescents may be more comfortable speaking privately with their GP, and we support this where appropriate and consistent with the young person's age and maturity.
Adolescent health services at Bopple Surgery include:
- General health assessments and preventive care
- Mental health assessment and support, including anxiety, depression and stress
- Acne and skin health management
- Sports and activity-related injuries
- Sexual and reproductive health, including contraception and STI testing
- Substance use conversations and harm reduction guidance
- School and study-related health concerns
Referral and Coordinated Care
When a child's health needs extend beyond what can be managed in a general practice setting, Bopple Surgery GPs coordinate timely referral to appropriate services. This may include:
- Paediatricians for complex medical or developmental concerns
- Speech pathologists for language and communication support
- Occupational therapists for fine motor, sensory or daily living skill development
- Psychologists for behavioural, emotional or mental health support
- Dietitians for nutritional assessment and feeding concerns
- Physiotherapists for musculoskeletal or developmental movement concerns
We aim to make the referral process as straightforward as possible for families, providing clear documentation and, where possible, supporting access to services locally or within the Fraser Coast region.
A Family-Friendly Environment at Bopple Surgery
We know that a trip to the GP can be daunting for young children, and stressful for parents. Our practice team works to create a calm, welcoming environment where families feel supported from the moment they arrive. We encourage parents to let our reception team know if their child has any particular anxieties or needs when booking, so we can do our best to accommodate them.
Our GPs take the time to speak directly with children in an age-appropriate way, helping to build trust and make the experience as positive as possible.

The Value of a Consistent Family GP
Children benefit from continuity of care, having a GP who knows their history, understands their family context and can track their development over time. At Bopple Surgery, we encourage families to register their children with a preferred GP and build an ongoing relationship with the practice through MyMedicare, the Australian Government's voluntary patient registration scheme.
Continuity of GP care helps ensure that developmental trends are noticed, chronic conditions are managed consistently, and health concerns are placed in the context of the child's full medical history.
