Men's Health GP Services in Tiaro, QLD

At Bopple Surgery – Tiaro Medical Centre, we provide comprehensive, GP-led men's health care for patients across Tiaro, Maryborough, Gympie, and the broader Fraser Coast and South Burnett region. Our AHPRA-registered GPs deliver a wide range of men's health services in a respectful, private, and judgement-free environment.

We understand that many men put off seeing a doctor. Our approach is straightforward and unhurried, focused on prevention, early detection, and long-term wellbeing rather than waiting for problems to become serious. Regular GP visits remain one of the most effective tools available for protecting your health. If you would prefer to see a male GP, simply let our reception team know when booking.

Our GPs provide assessment, diagnosis, monitoring, and referral support across heart health, diabetes, prostate and urological health, bowel cancer screening, sexual and reproductive health, mental health, workplace health, and preventive health checks, each tailored to your age, medical history, lifestyle, and specific concerns.

Heart Health Assessments

Cardiovascular disease remains one of the leading causes of death in Australian men. Many risk factors, including high blood pressure, elevated cholesterol, and early arterial changes,  develop gradually and without obvious symptoms, making regular GP screening essential. Our GPs provide structured heart health assessments for men of all ages, with particular focus on those aged 45 and over, or from age 30 for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men.

A heart health assessment at Bopple Surgery may include blood pressure measurement and cardiovascular risk calculation, cholesterol and blood glucose testing, BMI and waist circumference review, lifestyle assessment covering smoking, alcohol, activity and diet, an ECG where clinically indicated, and referral to a cardiologist where appropriate. Australian Government-funded Heart Health Checks are available through Medicare for eligible patients aged 45–79 (or 30–79 for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients).

Prostate & Urological Health

Prostate cancer is one of the most commonly diagnosed cancers in Australian men, and early detection significantly improves treatment outcomes. Screening in Australia is not part of a formal national program, it is an individual clinical decision made in consultation with your GP, weighing the benefits of early detection against the limitations of PSA (prostate-specific antigen) testing.

Men of average risk are encouraged to discuss prostate screening from age 50. Those with a first-degree relative diagnosed with prostate cancer should begin discussions from age 40–45. If you experience symptoms such as difficulty urinating, increased urinary frequency, a weak urine stream, blood in the urine or semen, or pelvic discomfort, please book a prompt appointment. Our GPs will provide you with clear, balanced information to help you make an informed decision.

Bowel Cancer Screening

Bowel cancer is the second most commonly diagnosed cancer in Australia and one of the most preventable when caught early. In many cases it develops slowly with no obvious symptoms, making screening a key preventive tool. The Australian Government's National Bowel Cancer Screening Program (NBCSP) offers free at-home faecal immunochemical tests (FIT) to eligible Australians aged 45 to 74, sent by mail every two years.

Your GP plays an important role in confirming your eligibility, providing a screening kit if you have not received one, explaining your results, and arranging a colonoscopy referral if required. Earlier or more frequent screening is available for patients with a family history of bowel cancer or other risk factors. If you notice any change in bowel habits, blood in your stool, unexplained weight loss, or persistent abdominal discomfort, please book an appointment promptly, do not wait for a scheduled screening cycle.

Sexual & Reproductive Health

Sexual and reproductive health is an important but often under-discussed component of male wellbeing. Our GPs provide confidential, non-judgemental consultations covering STI screening, testing and treatment; erectile dysfunction and sexual dysfunction assessment; libido concerns and hormonal health including testosterone assessment where clinically appropriate; contraception options and vasectomy referral; fertility concerns including semen analysis referral; and HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) information and prescription where eligible.

If you and your partner have been attempting to conceive for 12 months without success (or six months if either partner is over 35), a GP assessment is the recommended first step. Our doctors can arrange initial investigations and coordinate referrals to fertility specialists where appropriate.

Men's Mental Health Support

Mental health challenges affect a significant proportion of Australian men, yet men remain far less likely than women to seek support. At Bopple Surgery, we take men's mental health seriously, offering a straightforward, practical approach with no stigma and no judgement. Whether you are dealing with stress, anxiety, low mood, burnout, relationship difficulties, or simply not feeling yourself,  a conversation with your GP is a good starting point. You do not need to be in crisis to seek support.

Our GPs offer clinical assessment of mood, anxiety, and mental health symptoms; Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP) preparation providing Medicare rebates for up to 10 psychological sessions per calendar year; referrals to psychologists, psychiatrists, or counselling services; medication review and management; and guidance on community resources. If you or someone you know is in immediate distress, please call 000. For crisis support, contact Lifeline on 13 11 14 (24/7) or Beyond Blue on 1300 22 4636.

The above states services factually without creating unreasonable expectations of outcome. We have not claimed these assessments "prevent" heart disease, only that they support risk identification and reduction. This is consistent with current clinical evidence and compliant advertising.

Diabetes Screening & Management

Type 2 diabetes affects over 1.3 million Australians and disproportionately impacts men, particularly those who are overweight, physically inactive, or have a family history of the condition. Many cases go undiagnosed for years because early symptoms can be subtle or +absent. Our GPs provide diabetes risk assessments and ongoing management for patients with diagnosed Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes as part of our regular GP services.

Diabetes care at Bopple Surgery may include AUSDRISK screening, fasting blood glucose and HbA1c testing, weight and BMI assessment, lifestyle counselling covering diet, exercise, and smoking cessation, chronic disease management plans for patients with an established diagnosis, and referrals to endocrinologists, diabetes educators, and dietitians where required.

Workplace & Occupational Health

For men working in demanding industries, including agriculture, mining, construction, transport, and health and emergency services, maintaining fitness for duty and managing work-related health issues is essential. Bopple Surgery provides pre-employment and fitness-for-duty medical examinations, driver medicals for commercial and heavy vehicle licensing, workers compensation consultation and injury assessment, return-to-work planning and certification, and management of work-related injuries and musculoskeletal conditions.
