What Is a Driver's Licence Medical Assessment?
A driver's licence medical assessment is a structured evaluation conducted by a GP to determine whether a person meets the medical standards required to safely operate a motor vehicle. These assessments are required by Queensland Transport (TMR) and are conducted in accordance with the national Austroads Guide to Assessing Fitness to Drive.

Who Needs a Driver's Licence Medical?
You may be required to undergo a formal medical assessment if you:
- Are applying for or renewing a commercial vehicle licence (heavy vehicle, bus, or taxi)
- Hold a conditional licence due to a medical condition that requires periodic review
- Have been asked by Queensland Transport (TMR) to provide a medical clearance
- Are returning to driving following a significant illness, injury, or surgery
- Are an older driver required to undergo periodic fitness-to-drive assessment
- Hold or are applying for a multi-combination or dangerous goods licence
- Have a medical condition such as epilepsy, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, or a neurological condition that may affect driving safety

What Does the Assessment Include?
Depending on your licence class and the requirements of Queensland Transport or your licensing authority, your fitness-to-drive medical assessment at Bopple Surgery may include:
Vision and Eye Health
Assessment of visual acuity and field of vision to determine whether required visual standards for your licence class are met.
Cardiovascular and Blood Pressure Review
Evaluation of heart health, blood pressure, and cardiovascular risk factors relevant to sustained and safe vehicle operation.
Diabetes and Endocrine Review
Assessment of conditions such as diabetes that may affect alertness, consciousness, or driving safety, including a review of current management and monitoring.
Neurological Assessment
Screening for conditions including epilepsy, blackouts, transient ischaemic attacks (TIAs), or other neurological concerns that may present a risk while driving.
Musculoskeletal Examination
Assessment of strength, coordination, range of motion, and physical ability to safely control a vehicle, including use of foot pedals and steering.
Medication Review
Identification of any prescribed or over-the-counter medications that may impair reaction time, concentration, or judgement while driving.
Hearing Assessment
Evaluation of hearing to ensure adequate auditory awareness for safe road use and responsiveness to sirens, horns, and other road cues.
Cognitive and Mental Health Screening
Assessment of judgement, concentration, memory, and decision-making capacity relevant to driving safely in varying road conditions.
Fitness-to-Drive Certification
Completion of all required medical forms and documentation for submission to Queensland Transport (TMR) or the relevant licensing authority.
What to Bring to Your Appointment
To help your GP conduct a thorough and accurate assessment, please bring:
- Your current driver's licence or licence application paperwork
- Any correspondence from Queensland Transport (TMR) requesting the medical
- A list of your current medications (prescribed and over-the-counter)
- Details of any relevant medical conditions, recent illnesses, or surgeries
- Results of any recent specialist appointments related to your driving fitness (if applicable)
- Your glasses or contact lenses if you use them for driving
